SHOW ROOM invites you to the first release of Loving Is Repeating, a new collaborative artist book by Lex Braes and Freya Powell. The accordion book, printed in an edition of 13, explores the structure of a memory. Every time a memory is recalled it changes slightly, new details are added, or moments fade away. Starting with In Swansea, an early photograph by the 19th century Welsh photographer Reverend Calvert Jones, Braes and Powell explore the unraveling of a memory. Through a short, repeating text and the constant re-drawing of the town scene in the photograph, the book moves from an understood memory into abstraction.

Lex Braes is a Brooklyn-based, Scottish artist who is represented by Galerie Felix Ringel, Düsseldorf, Germany and SHOW ROOM. His work spans over three decades and has been exhibited widely across Europe and in the U.S.; Braes also teaches in the department of Architecture at Pratt Institute. In early 2012, he presented the exhibition Routine at SHOW ROOM.

Freya Powell is a British-born, Queens-based interdisciplinary artist whose practice explores languages relationship to memory. She received a B.A. from Bard College in 2006, and a M.F.A from CUNY- Hunter College in 2012. Powell has held residencies at The Vermont Studio Center, The Contemporary Arts Center at Woodside, and most recently the Bronx Museum’s Artist in the Marketplace program.

SHOW ROOM is a contemporary art gallery presenting exhibitions of mid-career and emerging artists.
